Pros And Cons Of Adding A "Waterhole" To Your Golf Course

If you're a golf course owner who is planning a redesign of at least some of the course, one idea that might be in your mind is adding what golfers commonly call a "waterhole." This term describes a hole in which instead of a traditional fairway, a water hazard fills much of the space between the tee and the green. While you probably have water hazards throughout your course, a waterhole takes the challenge to a whole new level. Here are some pros and cons of adding this type of hole.

Pro: It Will Attract Golfers

There's absolutely no question that a water hole will attract golfers who might not otherwise visit your golf course. Golfers of all abilities love this type of challenge, and even though it can be a worry to lose a ball and take a penalty stroke, the temptation of clearing the water and landing on the green is something that entices players. The addition of this hole can play a key role in the marketing that you do for your course.

Con: It Can Present Maintenance Challenges

An enormous body of water on your golf course presents its share of maintenance challenges. Your grounds crew will have to not only keep the water hazard topped up — which can be a constant effort if you're in a hot environment where the water evaporates quickly — but must also keep it clean by removing algae and other plant matter so that the water looks appealing. A good golf course grounds crew is capable of this work but needs to be adequately trained.

Pro: It Can Present A Revenue Stream

The fact that many golfers will hit their tee shots into the water means that a significant number of balls will find their way to the bottom of the water hazard each day. Golf courses often hire staff members to pick up the balls after hours — if the water is very deep, a diver with a snorkel may be necessary. You can then bundle the balls into groups and sell them as used balls in the pro shop. Given that you essentially have no cost to doing so, beyond paying whoever is retrieving them, this can generate a steady revenue stream.

Con: It Can Affect The Pace Of Play

Every golf course has rules about the pace of play that players must follow. Unfortunately, not everyone does — and this can aggravate other players. A waterhole is so fun and unique that players may like the idea of teeing off a couple of times. Doing so might not seem like a major offense, but if multiple players do so, it can really slow things down for other players. Fortunately, you can get around this by having your course marshals visit the waterhole regularly.

About Me

Making Your Kids Happy Every Day

Do you remember the last time your kids were truly happy? I started thinking about that very question, and it occurred to me that they needed a little more help getting outside and enjoying their free time. I started focusing on putting them in sports and encouraging them to try new things, and it was really cool to see how powerful the difference made for them. I wanted to start a new blog that was all about recreation and sports, because I have seen firsthand how much of a difference it can make to an individual. Read more on this blog for great tips.
